Astrape for Apple TV

Privacy Policy

Last updated 2026-10-13

In short

Astrape has no accounts, no ads and no tracking. It plays videos from your own servers. This policy says what leaves your Apple TV, and when.

Astrape is made by Georgios Moustakas.

Your servers and your videos

Your videos stay on your servers. Server addresses and sign-ins are not sent to Astrape. Passwords and keys are kept in this Apple TV's Keychain.

Metadata Online Lookup

This is on by default. You can turn it off in Settings, Privacy.

Astrape finds the title, poster, background and cast of the movies and TV episodes in your network locations on TheTVDB, through its own service.

For each video it sends only the title, year and episode read from the file's name, such as "The Agency 2024 S01E02". It does not send the file name, its address, the server or any sign-in. When a file is named only by its episode, the name of its show's folder goes with it.

Videos that look like home videos, camera clips or downloads are kept back, and so are clips of 5 minutes or less. These rules are not perfect. To be sure, turn off a location or a folder in Settings.

The service remembers the answer for each name it is asked about, for everyone, but not who asked. It keeps a code for this Apple TV's installation, made with Apple's App Attest, and when it was last used, to know the app is genuine. Like any website, it sees your network address while it answers. It does not store it.

Plex, Jellyfin and Emby libraries are not looked up.

Your Folders

Your Folders turns folders you made, such as "Kids" or "Christmas", into rows on Movies and TV Shows. It works only while Metadata Online Lookup is on.

For each folder with at least 4 titles, Astrape sends the folder's name, the names of the last 3 folders in its path (not the server or share), how many titles it holds and up to 20 of them, such as "Frozen (2013)". File names, addresses and sign-ins are not sent. A folder you added yourself is not sent.

An AI model hosted by Cloudflare reads the question. The service keeps only its answer, for 30 days.

Share Diagnostics

Share Diagnostics lets Astrape send reports to its developer when a video ends or can't play, and when the app crashes, freezes or runs out of memory.

Astrape asks "Share Diagnostics?" at most once per launch, and only after something went wrong. Nothing is sent unless you say yes. You can turn it off in Settings, Privacy.

A report holds what Astrape found out about the video (codec, container, size, frame rate and HDR type) and the checks it ran on it, how the playback went (how long it took to start, stalls, how it ended), the kind of location it came from, such as SMB or web, your HDR settings and what your TV shows, the Apple TV model, and the app and tvOS versions. A crash report adds what the app was doing in code, as numbers, and how much memory it used.

A report never holds file, folder, server or account names, addresses, or anything from a video. The service stores no install code and no network address with it. A report is kept for 90 days, then deleted.

If you choose Off, nothing is sent and the reports waiting on this Apple TV are deleted.

Report a Problem

In the player and in Media Info, Report a Problem sends one report when you press Send. It shows exactly what goes before you send it.

A report holds a code made on the Apple TV, a category you pick from a list, the app build, the Apple TV model, the tvOS version and, if there is one, the playback details above. It has no free text. It works whatever Share Diagnostics is set to.

Reports go to diagnostics.astrape.app only.

Subtitles: OpenSubtitles

OpenSubtitles is a separate company. Astrape asks it for subtitles when you open Subtitles for a video, and again when you search.

Astrape has no OpenSubtitles key of its own. You enter your own API key in Settings. It goes to OpenSubtitles with each request.

The search holds a fingerprint of the video (a number worked out from its size and its first and last 64 KB, with nothing of the video itself), a title read from the file's name and your subtitle search languages. OpenSubtitles also sees your network address.

If you sign in, your OpenSubtitles user name and password are sent to it when you download a subtitle. Nothing goes to Astrape's service. OpenSubtitles' own terms apply.

Plex

Plex is a separate company. If you add a Plex server, you sign in with a code at plex.tv/link. Astrape then talks to plex.tv to sign you in and find your servers, and sends it an identifier of this installation. Your Plex sign-in stays on this Apple TV. Plex's own terms and privacy policy apply.

Purchases

The 7-day trial and Astrape Full Unlock go through Apple. Astrape gets no payment data and stores nothing about purchases. It asks Apple, on the Apple TV.

Web Remote

The Web Remote runs on your Apple TV and stays on your local network. It does not use Astrape's service. Until you set a PIN in Settings, anyone on your network can use it.

Contact

Write to [email protected].

The Contact page in the app shows a QR code that opens an email on your phone, already filled in with the app and tvOS versions, the Apple TV model, the kind of network, the output resolution, your HDR settings, how many locations of each kind you have, and your last Report a Problem codes. You can read and change it before you send it. The app sends nothing itself.

If you write to us, we receive your email address and what you write.

Your rights in the EU and the UK (GDPR)

Who is responsible: Georgios Moustakas, the developer of Astrape, is the controller for the data described here. Write to [email protected]. A postal address will be added here.

Why each piece of data is used, and on what basis: the lookup, Your Folders and the installation code are used to provide the features you use and to keep the service from being abused (legitimate interests, GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). Diagnostics and Report a Problem are sent only with your consent (Article 6(1)(a)); you can withdraw it at any time with Share Diagnostics Off in Settings, Privacy. Emails you send are used to answer you (Article 6(1)(f)).

How long it is kept: diagnostics reports for 90 days; the installation code while this installation uses the service; emails as long as needed to answer and follow up. Lookup answers are kept by name, with nothing that says who asked.

Who handles it: Astrape's service runs on Cloudflare, which processes the data for us under its data processing agreement, and may do so outside the EU under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and the EU's Standard Contractual Clauses. Apple, OpenSubtitles and Plex handle what goes to them under their own policies.

Your rights: you can ask for a copy of your data, its correction or deletion, to restrict or object to its use, and to receive it in a portable form. Astrape has no accounts, so it usually can't tell which data is yours: write to us, and we will help as far as we can. Deleting Astrape removes everything it kept on this Apple TV. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live or work.

Astrape makes no automated decisions about you, and you don't have to give any of this data: without it, only the feature that needs it doesn't work.

Changes

When this policy changes, the date at the top changes.

This is the policy for the Astrape app on Apple TV. The same text is in the app under Settings, Privacy, and in App Store Connect as the Apple TV Privacy Policy. Questions: [email protected]. See also Support.
